A Statement from the European Province of the Society of Catholic Priests, following the death of George Floyd

A voice is heard in Ramah,
   lamentation and bitter weeping.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
   she refuses to be comforted for her children,
   because they are no more." Jeremiah 31:15

We are horrified at the murder of George Floyd. We stand together in sadness and prayer with our sisters and brothers in SCP North America and around the world. Anger is the appropriate response to this death and the fact that deaths like this are still going on and have not yet been consigned to our history books.

We recognise this is not just an American problem but that racism, the abuse of power, and the othering of people goes on around the world, in our own communities and in our church structures.

Seeking to be faithful to our Lord Jesus and those in our care, our calling compels us to see all people as icons of Christ. When we engage in the "othering" of people we deny the image of God in them.
